Major dust sources from a continuous mining operation include:

    • Continuous Miner

    • Roof Bolter

    • Feeder/Breaker

    • Intake Roadways

The highest respirable dust concentrations on continuous mining sections are generated from the continuous miner and the roof bolted.

As with any dust source, air and water are used to dilute, suppress, redirect, or capture dust.

MLS 100 DustCAP® Bars greatly improves water sprayer dust control effectiveness.

    Continuous Miner (CM) Operations:

Dust measurements show that CM operations, roof bolting, belt lines, and feeder-breaker activities can contribute a significant amount of respirable dust which emphasizes the need for dust controls at these processes.

Following are some basic controls for these areas:

MSHA recommends hollow- or full-cone sprays at the feeder-breaker transfer point to wet and knock down coal and silica dust.

When shuttle cars unload, dust levels can be decreased by using automated sprays at the mouth of the feeder-breaker that activate to wet coal before it enters the crusher.
